Description

L’Castel, fortified house of the lords of Pont-Saint-Martin
The fortified house known as L’Castel underwent several transformations and renovations between the 15th and 17th centuries. It is a large, three-story building (four if the basement is counted) with a quadrangular shape and a spacious courtyard.
The oldest part, dating back to the 15th century, corresponds to the central block. At ground level, this section originally served as a warehouse or space for processing agricultural products, while the two upper floors were the noble residential levels. A third floor, featuring built-in window seats, reflects more modest living quarters. On the south side of this floor, visitors can admire a balcony dating back to the 15th century.
In the early 17th century, a new western wing was added to enhance the building’s residential character. The two blocks were unified, floor levels modified, and new openings and internal passages created. The new construction also features large fireplaces (on the ground floor and in the wooden-ceilinged hall) and a small chapel in the projecting western section of the 17th-century building.
