Old Castle

Description

The oldest part of the castle is the original hexagonal defensive wall, with a ground-level entrance that once likely housed a “donjon,” now lost, possibly dating back to the 11th century. Entering through a rounded archway protected by arrow slits, visitors will see on the left a residential wing from the 13th–14th century, featuring large cross-shaped windows. Inside, remnants of monumental fireplaces are still visible, including the kitchen fireplace, whose vaulted ceiling—now collapsed—once had a central opening. Beside the noble residence, in the courtyard, stands a nearly intact cistern with pinkish plaster. To the east, a ruined section of the castle preserves the prison where, according to legend, the cousin of Caterina di Perloz was left to die after being kidnapped by Guglielmo di Bard and imprisoned in the corner tower. The site is currently not open to the public, as restoration and safety works are underway.
