Description
Nestled beside the ancient mule track in the gorge of the same name, this 18th-century chapel was long abandoned. In the choir walls, two small windows offer a direct view of the altar, suggesting they were used for a quick prayer by hurried passersby.
The setting is particularly striking: above, the site is dominated by a steep rocky cliff, while below runs the historic “Strada Reale” (Royal Road), with its impressive stone walls and neatly arranged stone pavement. Built in 1862 by King Vittorio Emanuele II to reach the Dondena plateau where he stayed during hunting trips, this road adds a remarkable historical context.
In 2021, thanks to the dedication of volunteers and parishioners, the chapel underwent careful restoration.
