Cima Piana

This is a ski mountaineering excursions in the Champorcher Valley. The broad summit overlooks the central valley, offering excellent panoramic views. The final slope, which faces south, should only be attempted when the snow is well consolidated.
If you do not have excellent knowledge of winter mountain conditions, it is strongly recommended to go with a qualified mountain guide.

Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn left towards Aosta. At the roundabout, keep left, continuing in the direction of Aosta.
Drive past Donnas and reach Bard. After the village, at the roundabout, turn left towards Champorcher. Pass through the village of Hône and enter the Champorcher Valley.
Continue past Pontboset and follow the road until you reach Champorcher. At the end of the village, turn right towards Dondena. The road climbs past Grand and Petit Mont Blanc, leading to a large car park, beyond which the road is usually snow-covered.
Alternatively, from the Verrès motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. Continue past Arnad until you reach the roundabout, then turn right following the signs for Champorcher.
Trail description
From the car park, climb the slope above until you are close to the road’s hairpin bend, where you turn right and continue towards the La Cort huts. Pass them, traverse leftwards, and then climb steeply through sparse trees to reach the upper slopes.
Continue ascending the slope, then move left and follow the small stream until you reach a hollow. From here, climb to the right to enter the Muffé lake basin.
At this point, head left, passing near the Muffé refreshment point. Continue briefly in the direction of Lago Bianco Pass, before tackling the steep slopes leading up to Cima Piana.
Near the top, move right to overcome a steep section and reach a small hollow. A final short climb leads onto a level stretch, which brings you directly to the summit, offering superb panoramic views.
The descent follows the same route. In stable and safe snow conditions, it is also possible to descend directly down the southern slope towards Lake Muffé.
