June - July - August

Brief description

The Bonze Refuge is located at the entrance to the wide Bonze basin, a rugged and striking landscape that gives the place a unique charm.
The trail crosses the steep slopes of Bec Renon, with a series of short ascents and descents. On the way back, expect a few brief climbs, adding up to about 100 meters of elevation gain.
As an alternative, with a greater overall ascent, you can also start from the hamlet of Donnes or from the village of Prapousaz.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn left towards Aosta.
At the roundabout, keep left, continuing in the direction of Aosta.
Follow the long straight road almost to its end, passing through two traffic lights, until you find on your left the road descending towards Vert.
Pass under the railway, cross the Dora Baltea River, and continue to a small roundabout where you turn left.
Continue straight, then at the junction turn left again. At the end of the long straight stretch, turn right towards the hamlet of Montey (the church is clearly visible).
The road now climbs the mountain slope with steep switchbacks before reaching, on a diagonal, the houses of Prapousaz, just beyond which traffic is restricted. If you are heading to the Bonze Hut, however, you are allowed to continue as far as the hamlet of Vesey, where you can park along the roadside.

Trail description

From the car park, follow the rural road for a short stretch until you find, on the left, the trail that quickly climbs through the forest to the hamlet of Caroussaz (it is also possible to take the trail about 300 meters earlier, though it is not always easy to spot).
From the houses, a beautiful path begins, crossing several gullies—some sections require extra care when the ground is wet—before entering the Bonze Refuge.
The route includes a few short descents to get around rocky areas. Once inside the basin, the trail climbs steeply until you reach the Bonze Refuge.
The return follows the same route back.
