Description
The geological trail ‘Le Pietre del Lys’ is located in Fontainemore, in the valley floor, just a short walk from the town center, near the Niana green area.
The trail is an educational path among large boulders that illustrate the main geological events of the Lys Valley. It serves both educational and recreational purposes, making it suitable for adults and children alike.
The sequence of rocks guides visitors on an imaginary journey from the Dora Baltea Valley all the way to the Monte Rosa massif. The exposed lithologies belong to the geological systems of the Vallaise: the Austro-Alpine system, the Piedmont zone, and the Penninic system.
The boulders—about a dozen grouped in stations—mainly derive from debris, quarry stone, rock dumps, and riverbeds. They vary in size, typically around 1 cubic meter, and feature intriguing shapes: some are rounded or smoothed by river or glacial action, while others display sharp edges from quarrying or rockfalls. Along the trail, informative panels explain the main characteristics of the different rocks.
