Pont Moretta

Description

The two sides of the lower Lys Valley have been separated by the Lys stream since time immemorial, possibly as far back as the pre-Roman era, with a crossing at the Moretta gorge. It is said that the ancient Salassi road, which connected the Canavese to what is now the Aosta Valley along the sunny slopes of the mid-mountain, passed precisely here, where the Lys flows through a narrow gorge between the cliffs of the two valley sides.
Over the centuries, the crossing was rebuilt countless times in wood, on stone and lime abutments, until the current fully masonry bridge was constructed in 1721. At the center of the bridge, a frescoed oratory was built, still standing today, serving as a gateway.
