Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

Culture - Churches and Sanctuaries
Gressoney-Saint-Jean

Description

The church is located in the main village, known as de Platz, and was originally built in 1515, with an expansion in 1753.
Inside, you can visit the parish museum, which houses a beautiful 13th-century crucifix, one of the oldest in the Aosta Valley.
The forecourt, once used as a cemetery, still preserves the high stone cross of 1735. The portico, dating back to 1626, contains a series of small chapels (d’Gheimnisse) whose paintings depict the Mysteries of the Way of the Cross.
The bell tower dates from the church’s original construction but was later raised, and the original stone spire was replaced with the current pointed copper tip.
