Description

Clearly visible from the main road thanks to its slightly elevated position, the church—flanked by a later square-based bell tower—was rebuilt on the foundations of an earlier religious building, probably dating back to the 13th century.
Richly decorated with frescoes, the church features three naves: the central one ends with a flattened oval dome, while the side naves are covered by barrel vaults, supported by square pillars that sustain full-centered arches, above which a cornice forms the base for the vault arches.
Among the five altars, the most striking is the grand and polychrome marble high altar from the 18th century, predating the current church itself. The doors, choir stalls, organ loft—crafted by the sculptor Baldarelli and supported by caryatid heads—together with the confessionals and baptistery, are all in wood, as is the pulpit, adorned with evident bas-reliefs by the artist Delponte. The church’s portal and interior decoration were designed by Francesco and Lorenzo Avondo.
