Description
Of very ancient origin, the Church of Hône, dedicated to Saint George, first appears in documents in 1176 among the parish churches under the bishop’s jurisdiction.
It was rebuilt in the early decades of the 18th century. The new building housed the main altar, blessed in 1722, with further work carried out a few years later in 1724 by Gaspare Serra, a sculptor from Tollegno, Biella. The Gilardi brothers, known for similar projects in the Champorcher Valley, created the statues for the triumphal arch in 1742.
In 1833, the church was almost entirely rebuilt, at least in the lower section, by master builder Giuseppe Lancia from Boccioleto in Valsesia, following the design of a military engineer named Servetti. In 1897, the interior was beautifully frescoed by the famous painters from Verrès, Alessandro and Augusto Artari.
The parish museum preserves a fine 15th-century bas-relief depicting Saint George, the princess, and the dragon, and on the rear wall, another 16th-century bas-relief of the Madonna of Mercy, possibly from the Ruine Chapel, which was destroyed by a flood in the 17th century.
