Description
The first construction of the sanctuary is believed to date back to the 12th century, following the chance discovery—according to tradition—of a small statue of the Madonna, likely hidden during the barbarian invasions. Between 1715 and 1718, the sanctuary was expanded.
The façade is very elegant, featuring a portico supported by four columns. Inside, frescoes by the Avondo brothers from the 19th century adorn the vaulted ceilings and walls, which are covered with small ex-voto paintings, expressions of popular faith and gratitude for ‘graces received.’
In the square in front of the church, visitors can admire a beautiful fountain with a mascaron dated 1642 and a basin carved from a single block of stone. At the rear of the church stand the bell tower and the pilgrims’ house, with an elegant portico offering sweeping views over the plain.
