Mont Mars Nature Reserve

Description

The Mont Mars Regional Nature Reserve is a small gem of the Alps at the entrance to the Lys Valley.
It contains everything that high mountain nature can offer: dense forests, imposing peaks, green alpine meadows, crystal-clear lakes, and wetlands rich in rare flora.
The highest summit is Mont Mars, rising above scree slopes and steep rock faces with its majestic 2,600-meter pyramid.
Covering 380 hectares, the Reserve is a blend of nature, history, and tradition. A rich network of trails crosses the area, reflecting centuries of agropastoral life based on the summer transhumance of herds toward alpine pastures and the exchanges between valleys that shaped the Valdostan economy.
For over four hundred years, the famous religious procession from Fontainemore to the Sanctuary of Oropa has also passed through this territory.
Pian Coumarial serves as the main gateway to the reserve.
