Description
The museum is housed in the building of the ‘Il Riccio’ cooperative, which handles the collection, selection, drying, and marketing of chestnuts.
Featuring a collection of tools and objects primarily used in the past for processing chestnuts, the museum also showcases various local chestnut varieties. For centuries, chestnuts were a staple food for families living in the lower Lys Valley, earning them the nickname ‘the bread of the poor.’
The building includes a reconstructed ‘gra’—a traditional chestnut-drying area—alongside common living spaces such as a kitchen and bedroom. Visitors can learn about historical processing techniques, and in October, the museum offers a chance to observe the modern collection and processing of chestnuts using contemporary machinery, enabling broader commercialization of this cherished local product.
