Church of Fontaney

Description

The Church of Fontaney is located along the regional road of Perloz, in an area rich in springs whose moisture unfortunately caused the deterioration of this beautiful model, which reproduces in miniature the plan of Aosta Cathedral. It was built between 1590 and 1595 by Baron Pierre di Vallaise on land owned by his family.
The church has a rectangular plan with three naves, divided by pillars decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the Lives of the Saints. The interior paintings, in fair condition, are dated 1726. The polygonal apse features an ambulatory that extends the side naves. The vaults are barrel-shaped, separated by bands of gray stone. The façade was frescoed in 1600 with Renaissance paintings illustrating scenes from the Holy Scriptures.
Restoration work was carried out on the plaster in 1968, and in 1998 the roof was rebuilt, concluding a complex series of recovery and restoration interventions that returned the monument to its original identity. Today, the Church of Fontaney has finally been restored to the community.
