Walkhu and San Grato Chapels

( 1.670 m)
Hiking
Start from Issime
June - July - August - September

Brief description

A beautiful route that leads to the Chapel of San Grato.
In addition to the famous church of Issime, from which the hike starts, you can visit the Grotta della SS. Agonia Chapel, very characteristic because it is built underground, as well as the Walkhu and San Grato chapels.
The middle mule track leading to Hubal, although very steep, is truly special.
The detour to the Walkhu Chapel takes you through a village that is now abandoned.
Upon returning to the car, it is recommended to visit the church of Issime.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left towards Gressoney.
The road climbs a few hundred meters before turning right into the Lys Valley road, passing through the villages of Lillianes and Fontainemore.
Continue into the territory of Issime until reaching the village, where the church and car park can be seen on the right.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the square towards the town hall, then cross the road and take the narrow street between the houses.
Turn left and ascend along the hillside (the view of the church from above is beautiful).
Pass by a small chapel and continue along the lovely mule track, which crosses the paved road a few times, until reaching the Grotta Chapel.
After visiting the interior, backtrack a few meters to take the passage that returns you to the paved road. Follow it to the first hairpin bend, where the trail starts on the left.
After crossing the small stream, begin the beautiful mule track, with some steps, leading to Hubal.
Follow it past a viewpoint overlooking the lovely waterfall, reaching the houses of Hubal with its charming rascard.
Continue straight on flat terrain, then a gentle descent brings you to the stream; climb up to the houses and continue on flat ground to the small chapel.
Return along the same route to Hubal, then take the mule track on the left, which leads to the rural road to San Grato.
Cross the road and ascend the steep ridge, passing several beautiful stone houses until exiting the forest.
San Grato Chapel now comes into view, reached by a final stretch across the meadows (note on the right the beautiful white stone windows of the Holscher house).
The descent follows the same route (naturally without the detour to the Walkhu Chapel).
