Vers-Riasseu / Lera-Nova

( 1.368 m)
Hiking
Start from Lillianes
April - May - June - July - August - September

Brief description

A scenic mule track route, but particularly in the second section, it includes very steep stretches. Suitable only for those comfortable with steep ascents and descents.
During the climb, you pass through several villages perched on the very steep mountainside. The landscape is almost entirely terraced, showcasing the remarkable work carried out in the past to cultivate mainly chestnuts.
At the start, you cross the only four-arched bridge in the Aosta Valley.
Alternatively, you can stop at Riasseux or drive up near Vers-Riasseu and complete only the second, steeper section of the trail.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left towards Gressoney.
After a few hundred metres, take the right-hand turn onto the Valle del Lys road and follow it all the way to Lillianes.
Pass through the narrow central section of the village until the road widens. Turn left to reach the convenient car park along the Lys river.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the beautiful stone bridge, passing by the hostel and the church. Upon reaching the road, follow it to the right until the bridge, where on the left, just after the house, the mule track begins.
The scenic mule track climbs through chestnut terraces until it reaches the road for vehicles. Cut across a couple of hairpin bends, then leave the road to ascend through the village of Russy.
You will reach a votive shrine, where the trail rises to the right. A very steep section now begins, overcoming a rock barrier until reaching another terraced chestnut area. On the left, notice a charming barma (shelter built under a rock used for agricultural storage). Continue to the vehicle road, follow it for a short distance, then ascend to the left through the houses of Piatta, and shortly afterwards reach Vers-Riasseu.
Head left (the ancient oven is on the right) until reaching the charming chapel. Take the mule track to the right, which climbs diagonally until it meets the track coming from below.
From this point, the route is very steep, but passes several interesting barma shelters, and eventually leads to the few houses of Lera-Nova.
