Brief description
The first part of the route follows the service road of the Bettaforca ski lifts, then leaves it to ascend the narrow valley leading to the pass.
Along the entire hike, you can enjoy close-up views of the Monte Rosa massif, and with good binoculars, even spot climbers on the glacier.
The middle section is steep, but once you enter the valley, you are rewarded with the beautiful Saler lakes.
From the pass, the view opens onto the Ayas Valley with a stunning panorama of the upper Aosta Valley.
This route is part of the Tour du Mont Rose and is fairly popular.

Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Torino. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
Drive for a few hundred meters and take the road on the right leading into the Lys Valley, passing through Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, Gaby, and Gressoney-Saint-Jean until you reach Gressoney-La-Trinité.
Without entering the village, turn right toward Staffal and follow the road to its end, where there are two large paid car parks.
During periods of low traffic, parking lots are also available at the start of the service road.
Trail description
From the large car park, follow the road along the Lys until you reach a second dirt car park on the left where the trail begins.
Take the dirt road, which climbs through the larch forest with wide switchbacks, then veers left to enter the valley at the Sant'Anna plain (alternatively, this point can also be reached using the cable car from the valley floor).
Continue along the service road to the hairpin bend before the Sitten refuge, where you leave the road to follow a flat trail that crosses a small stream.
Next comes a steep section that skirts some rock walls, followed by a leftward traverse over a slightly exposed stretch, reaching the start of the final valley.
Cross a small flat basin with a stream to the right side of the valley, then climb to the two Saler ponds.
A final steep ascent brings you to the Rothorn Pass.
