Brief description
Rifugio Sella takes you into the heart of Monte Rosa at 3,585 meters.
Situated on a rocky plateau, it serves as the starting point for several ascents on Monte Rosa, particularly Castore.
The location is incredibly scenic and unforgettable: surrounded by glaciers, with the Lyskamm ridge towering above.
The final part of the ascent is fully equipped but very exposed. Using a harness for safety and via ferrata gloves is recommended.
For those not accustomed to high-altitude environments, the significant altitude gain can make the final section more strenuous.

Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left following signs for Gressoney.
The road climbs for several hundred meters before turning right onto the Lys Valley road, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, Gaby, and Gressoney-Saint-Jean, until reaching the main village of Gressoney-La-Trinité.
Without entering the village, turn right towards Staffal and follow the road to its end, where there are two large paid car parks.
Trail description
After parking, take the cable car to the Sant’Anna basin and then the chairlift to the top above Colle della Bettaforca.
From the top station, continue along a stony small valley on the Gressoney side, then cross to reach Passo della Bettolina Inferiore.
Follow the wide rocky ridge to reach Passo della Bettolina Superiore.
Continue a short distance to the “Capanna del Mulo”, named for the spot where mules could no longer ascend and loads had to be carried on the shoulders.
Follow the right side of the ridge to a large cairn, marking the start of the more technical section.
The ridge narrows but is well-protected. Cross a small footbridge and complete the final partly equipped stretch to reach the plateau where Quintino Sella refuge is located.
The descent follows the same route.
