Queen's walk

Hiking
Start from Gressoney-Saint-Jean
May - June - July - August - September

Brief description

A much-frequented route that allows you to admire all the beauties of Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
The Quen's walk "Passeggiata della Regina" refers only to the section between Castel Savoia and Tschemenoal. On the return, instead of following the same trail, the proposed route continues along the opposite side, creating a beautiful loop.
Some sections run at a higher level, offering excellent views of the village and Monte Rosa, while other sections follow the Lys stream.
On the return, pass near Villa Margherita, where the Queen used to stay, with its beautiful park featuring monumental trees.
The first part, from Castel Savoia to the village, was the section most frequented by Queen Margherita.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left following the signs for Gressoney.
The road climbs for a few hundred meters before turning right into the Lys Valley, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, and Gaby.
Continue until you reach the large car park on the left, where the Weissmatten chairlift starts and where you can leave your car.

Trail description

From the large car park, cross the stream and follow the Alta Via No. 1 trail until you reach the Castel Savoia car park.
From here, the Regina Trail begins, leading all the way to the village.
The route is mostly flat, with a few gentle ups and downs, and offers continuous views of Monte Rosa.
Just before reaching Lake Gover, follow the left branch for a short stretch, then return to the right fork.
The trail crosses a characteristic scree field and reaches the upper part of the golf course.
Cross the wide basin, swept by avalanches in winter, then continue along the trail through the fir forest until reaching the houses of Chemonal.
Pass between the houses, then cross the regional road and continue straight, crossing the stream.
Continue on the right-hand side, passing near the hydroelectric power plant, and follow the stream to the downtown of Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
After the bridge, follow the Lys River until Villa Margherita, where you can cross to visit the park.
Pass by the tennis courts to reach the houses of Upper Valdobbia.
Continue along the path until reaching the sports hall, from where, following the regional road, you return to the car.
