Pourcil and Cormoné

( 1.535 m)
Hiking
Start from Hône
May - June - July - August - September

Brief description

This itinerary is quite steep but follows beautiful trails, mostly in the shade, making it suitable for very hot days.
From Cormoné, the view of the valley floor and the Moillaz ravine is spectacular.
On the return, a short detour is recommended to visit the charming village of Pourcil, with its characteristic chapel, followed by the dramatic passage overlooking the Fort of Bard.
For those wishing to reduce the effort, it is possible to drive along the Pourcil road up to about 780 meters, where a no-entry sign is placed. This shortens the hike by a couple of hours. From this point, follow the road until reaching the mule track described in the main route.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn left towards Aosta. At the roundabout, continue to the left, still in the direction of Aosta.
Continue past Donnas and reach Bard. After passing through the town, at the roundabout, turn left towards Hône.
Drive through Hône, and near the end of the town, on the left, you’ll see the square with the town hall. Turn left, follow the road along the stream on the right, and after a few dozen meters, you will reach the car park.
From the Verrès motorway exit, turn right towards Turin, pass Arnad, and at the roundabout, turn right in the direction of Champorcher.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the bridge and follow the main road leading to Pourcil. Just past the hydroelectric plant, the mule track begins on the left.
The mule track climbs steeply through the forest, passing the penstocks, and continues upward. Along the way, you pass a former military fortification before reaching a road that is followed for a short stretch. Turn left off the road to leave the route to Pourcil (which will be revisited on the return) and climb steeply along the ridge until reaching the Grangettes houses.
Continue through the beautiful beech forest to reach the large Cormoné clearing. Cross to the left along a faint path, then join the trail coming from Donnas, which leads to the mountain huts.
The first part of the descent retraces the same path. After passing the Grangettes houses, continue a short distance, then turn right onto the trail descending to Pourcil.
Upon reaching the village, admire the chapel with its characteristic bell tower, and discover interesting architectural details among the houses. At the end, on the left, a lovely wooden table with benches awaits.
Continue and traverse the steep rock face along the protected trail (with the Fort of Bard directly below) until rejoining the trail from the morning.
Follow it in reverse to return to the car park.
