Monte Rosa WalserWaeg 90 km

( 2.640 m)
Trail running
Start from Gressoney-Saint-Jean
July - August

Brief description

The route follows the Monte Rosa WalserWaeg trail, which takes place in summer.
It’s a 90 km adventure with approximately 7,000 meters of elevation gain, exploring the most beautiful and wild corners of the upper Lys Valley.
The route retraces the first and last sections of the 45 km trail, with the addition of the stunning Loo Valley. Along the way, it continues on scenic trails and passes over several passes in the municipalities of Gaby and Issime, including the village of Niel, Col Lazouney, Col della Vecchia, Crenna dou Leui, Col della Forca, Colletto Taf, and Col Ranzola.
This itinerary is ideal for long-distance enthusiasts who want to challenge themselves on a demanding yet truly unique route. Due to its length, the trail can be divided into two sections: first the 45 km trail, then the remaining portion.
For training purposes, estimated times are calculated assuming a pace 1.5 times faster than normal (about 450 meters of ascent per hour).

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Torino. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
After a few hundred meters, take the road to the right that follows the Lys Valley, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, and Gaby. Continue until you reach Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Just before crossing the bridge over the Lys River, turn left into a car park with several spaces.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the bridge and reach Lake Gover, the official start of the trail. Alternatively, you can bypass the lake and follow the Lys River to the car park. Cross the stream and continue along it to the hydroelectric plant, where the climb toward Rong begins. Just before the village, take the path on the right, which, with some steep sections, leads up to Passo di Valdobbiola.
Descend to the right along a long traverse (exposed in parts) to reach the Sottile Refuge at Col Valdobbia. Continue down the steep valley to the houses of Valdobbia, then proceed left to cross the regional road before the small artificial lake. Follow a trail across the meadows until you meet the Alta Via No. 1, which you follow to Woald. Turn sharply left, cross the stream, and reach the regional road.
Follow the road a short distance to the right, cross it, and take the path to Lommattò. Rejoin the Alta Via No. 1 and, for a long stretch, follow the Tor des Géants route in reverse. Climb the long Loo Valley, stopping at Ober Loo for refreshments at the farm shop, until you reach Col di Lazouney. From here, a steep descent brings you to La Gruba, where you can rest.
Turn left, cross the small bridge, then descend to the right to reach another bridge. Continue with some ups and downs, passing Col della Vecchia and the characteristic passage of Crenna de Leui. A very steep descent follows into the Tourrison Valley. Leave the Alta Via and Tor des Géants route and turn right, descending to Biouley village. At the chapel, turn right and follow a faint path along a ledge to reach the paved road. Turn right and follow the Lys River to the second bridge, cross it, and reach Issime, where food options are available.
Continue past the village, then turn right at the end to cross the bridge and follow the left side of the river to Gaby. Enter the village, then turn left before the stream and descend to the sports hall. Rejoin the regional road, turn left after about 100 meters, cross the stream, and follow the path to Yair. From here, a scenic trail leads to Pian du Beily. Descend along a long traverse to Pont Trenta, continue on a beautiful mule track, then turn left and climb a short section through the forest to cross the stream. From the left, start the steep climb to Col Frudière.
From the pass, cross into Val d’Ayas and climb the extremely steep Taf passage (final flat but exposed section with fixed rope). Return to the Gressoney side, climb a short section, then descend along the ridge and across a stone slope to Weissmatten (Mollino Refuge). Follow the main trail to Col Ranzola, then descend to the left to reach the Walser path, marked with W signs.
Continue along the high trail with ups and downs until reaching the beautiful village of Alpenzù Grande, home to the eponymous refuge, then Alpenzù Piccolo, and finally Gressoney-La-Trinité for refreshments. Follow the Lys River to Staffal, cross the bridge and regional road, and enter the Mos Valley. After the first step of the valley, follow the road to the first junction, turn left, and climb to Alpe Welfsch Gaveno. Descend to the right, cross the bridge, and follow a long traverse to Gabiet Refuge.
Continue along the right side of Lake Gabiet to the dam, then climb to the guardian’s house and follow the traverse. Cross the basin leading to Passo dell’Uomo Storto, then the Gastaldi bivouac basin. Follow the trail to the left, which offers panoramic views with some exposed sections, to reach the houses of Ciampono. A steep descent brings you to the village of Biela, where the Walser Villages trail begins. Turn left, reach Rong, descend to the right, and reach the valley floor.
Follow the regional road to Chemonal, then turn right to take the trail along the contour to the endpoint at Lake Gover.
Most of this route overlaps with other well-documented trails.
