Trail running
Start from Gressoney-Saint-Jean
July - August

Brief description

The route follows the Monte Rosa WalserWaeg trail, which takes place in summer.
This scenic 46 km loop features nearly 3,500 meters of elevation gain and offers stunning views of the Monte Rosa massif.
The trail passes through the village of Sant'Anna (with close-up views of Monte Rosa), the Gabiet dam, the wild Valdobbiola valley, the Ospizio Sottile, Lago Gover, and the charming villages of Alpenzu.
The real highlight of this route is the ancient Walser trail (WalserWaeg) and the panoramic path connecting the Gabiet basin to the Ciampono valley.
It is ideal for those who enjoy technical and challenging routes without sacrificing spectacular landscapes.
For training purposes, times are calculated assuming a pace 1.5 times faster than normal (approximately 450 meters of ascent per hour).

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Torino. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
After a few hundred meters, take the road to the Valle del Lys on the right, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, and Gaby.
Continue until you reach Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Just before crossing the bridge over the Lys River, a car park with several spaces is located on the left.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the bridge to reach Lake Gover (official start of the trail) or, without going to the lake, follow the Lys River upstream to the car park.
Cross the stream and continue along it to the small hydroelectric station, where the climb toward Rong begins.
Before reaching the village, a trail on the right starts, which climbs steeply in sections up to Passo di Valdobbiola.
Descend to the right along a long ledge (some exposed sections) and then a short climb brings you to Rifugio Sottile at Col Valdobbia.
Continue down the steep valley to the houses of Valdobbia, then turn left and cross the regional road just before the small artificial lake.
Follow the meadows until you reach the Alta Via No. 1 trail, which leads to Castel Savoia car park.
Take the Sentiero della Regina; just after a small stream, a steep path on the left climbs to Alpe Roncké, where the Walser trail (marked with a W) is joined.
The route stays in altitude with several ups and downs until reaching the beautiful village of Alpenzù Grande, home to the refuge of the same name, followed by Alpenzù Piccolo and then Gressoney-La-Trinité, where a stop for refreshment is possible.
Follow the Lys River to Staffal, cross the bridge and regional road, then enter the Mos valley.
After the first step in the valley, follow the road to the first junction, turn left, and climb to Alpe Welfsch Gaveno. Descend to the right to cross the small bridge, then traverse to reach Rifugio Gabiet.
Continue along the right shore of Lake Gabiet to the dam, pass it, and climb to the guardian’s house, then continue climbing along a ledge.
Cross the basin leading to Passo dell’Uomo Storto, then the basin of Bivacco Gastaldi.
Follow the panoramic trail on the left (some exposed sections) leading to the chalets of Ciampono. A steep descent brings you to the houses of Biela, where the Walser Villages Trail turns left and leads to Rong. Descend to the right to reach the valley floor.
Follow the regional road to the houses of Chemonal, then take the trail on the right along the ledge, which leads back to Lake Gover, ending the route.
Most of the route overlaps other trails, where detailed descriptions are available.
