Gastaldi Bivouac and Gabiet

( 2.619 m)
Hiking
Start from Gressoney-La-Trinité
July - August

Brief description

The ascent to the Gastaldi Bivouac is quite steep but rewards hikers with a very wild and pristine environment.
Once at the bivouac, it is possible to descend to the Netscio Lakes. The proposed hike, after the initial descent, includes a small climb and a traverse to reach Gabiet Lake, returning via the Netscio Valley. Alternatively, the descent can be done along the same route used for the ascent.
In the final section of the climb to the Gastaldi Bivouac, there is a short equipped stretch with a metal rope that must be navigated with caution.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin highway exit, turn right toward Torino. At the second roundabout, turn left in the direction of Gressoney.
After a few hundred meters, take the road on the right leading into the Lys Valley, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, Gaby, and Gressoney-Saint-Jean, until reaching the main town of Gressoney-La-Trinité.
At the roundabout, continue to the right toward Staffal. Cross the stream and proceed for several hundred meters until reaching the crossroads leading into the town center. On the right, there are parking lots available along the road.

Trail description

By car, take the small road that leads to the start of the scenic ascent trail.
Continue until reaching a crossroads where you take the steep path upward (the other trail will be used for the return). The path climbs steeply through a larch forest until reaching the panoramic Alpe di Spilmannsberg.
The trail then shifts left, high above the valley, crossing the stream shortly after 2,300 meters. Continue through the valley center, then veer left to pass the section with a metal rope. Proceed over grassy and rocky sections until reaching the bivouac, which becomes visible only at the last moment.
On the return, descend the first part until reaching the right-hand fork for Gabiet (around 2,430 meters, marked 3A). The trail descends to bypass a rocky ridge, reaching nearly 2,300 meters, then climbs about 100 meters to cross the basin and descend to Alpe Skearpie.
Follow a long diagonal descent to reach the Gabiet dam. From there, take the main trail (marked 4) that descends through the center of the wide valley. When the valley narrows, continue along the stream edge until reconnecting with the trail used in the morning, and shortly after, back to the car.
