Crabun

( 2.711 m)
Hiking
Start from Perloz
July - August

Brief description

A very challenging ascent that leads to a summit offering panoramic views from the plains to many mountains of the Aosta Valley.
In the first part of the route, you pass through two well-restored villages, Pessé and Pra, where two monumental trees can be admired.
The final slope of the trail is steep and fully exposed to the sun, so it should not be attempted on very hot days. During the summer, it is advisable to start very early in the morning.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
The road climbs for a few hundred meters, then take the right turn into the Valle del Lys road, following it until you pass the hamlet of Tour d'Hérèraz.
Just after, on the left, you will find the road that descends (signs for Chemp). Cross the stream and continue until reaching the hamlet of Chamioux, where the road from Perloz joins. Turn right and follow a series of steep hairpin bends to reach the village of Marine.
Pass through the village and continue through the chestnut woods. Leave the road to Chemp on the right, then at the next junction, turn right toward Fey. Follow this road until the village, where there is a no-entry sign and a small car park on the right.

Trail description

From the car park, follow the road for about 100 meters, then turn right onto the trail that climbs along the mountainside and leads to the main mulattiera.
Follow it through some characteristic sections until you reach the paved road just before Pessé. Continue a short distance, then cross the road to reach the distinctive stone cross and the monumental ash tree.
Cross the village, following the paved road to the last houses of Pra, where you turn left onto the mulattiera that climbs the narrow valley. Continue ascending, then cross the valley and climb steeply to reach the beautiful alpe Pian basin on your left.
The landscape now opens up, and about 1,000 meters above, you can see the Crabun summit cross. Ascend the steep valley with tight switchbacks, then continue along a long traverse leading to the ridge. Following the ridge, you reach the two bivouacs and, shortly after, the summit with its distinctive cross.
The descent follows the same route.
