Brief description
A demanding excursion that, in its upper section, traverses a beautiful north-east-facing valley which often holds snow.
The first section, up to the pastures below the village of Alpenzu Grande, must be followed entirely along the ascent mule track. In spring, this section is often snow-free.
From the village plateau, the lovely slopes begin that lead up to the col.
If you do not have excellent knowledge of winter mountain conditions, it is strongly recommended to be accompanied by an alpine guide.
The route may vary depending on snow conditions; therefore, the GPS track cannot be downloaded from the website and is not visible on the app.

Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left following the signs for Gressoney.
The road climbs for a few hundred metres before turning right into the Lys Valley, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, and Gaby.
Continue until you reach Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Cross the bridge over the Lys stream and continue across the large plain until reaching the hamlet of Schmettò, where the car park is on the left.
Trail description
From the car park, follow the wide mule track that climbs in switchbacks up the very steep mountainside until you emerge from the forest.
You will then encounter steep slopes, which are climbed before a right-hand traverse leads to the village of Alpenzu and its rifugio.
From this point, the slopes become more open and suitable for skiing. Ascend diagonally to the right, enjoying spectacular views of the Monte Rosa, until reaching Alpe Ondro Montil.
Now climb a steep valley with the last larches, then traverse right to reach the upper section of the valley leading to Col Pinter.
Continue across wide slopes towards Alpe Pinter. Without reaching it, turn left and, following broad slopes and choosing the best line according to snow conditions, reach Col Mascognaz.
