Col Lazouney

( 2.451 m)
Ski mountaineering
Start from Gaby
June - July - August - September

Brief description

A beautiful and varied hike, but being on a southern slope, it requires abundant snow.
The ascent should be undertaken when the snow is well settled, and the descent should not be too late in the day. In the middle section, the route is not easy to follow.
Optionally, with a steeper section, it is possible to reach Punta Lazouney. If you do not have excellent winter mountain experience, it is highly recommended to go with a certified alpine guide.
The route may change depending on snow conditions; therefore, the GPS track is not downloadable from the website, and it is not visible on the app.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
After a few hundred meters, take the road to the Lys Valley on the right, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, and Issime.
Reach the main village of Gaby, where just before the bridge over the Niel stream, turn right onto the road leading to Niel. Follow the stream, then cross it and ascend the mountainside via wide switchbacks up to Chanton.
The road narrows as you continue, leading all the way to the charming village of Niel.

Trail description

From the car park, follow the steep trail that leads to the upper basin (sometimes with little snow, requiring a hike on foot).
The path then continues onto broader, gentler slopes up to Alpe Stubin, where the trail resumes toward the two bridges. After crossing them, ascend to the first houses of Schtovela, then continue left through the sparse larch forest.
You will reach the start of a steep gully that climbs to the scenic slopes below the Jatzit huts. Pass the huts, cross to the right, and navigate a more challenging section to reach the upper slopes. From here, the terrain becomes more regular as you head right toward Lago di Suckie.
Before reaching the lake, veer sharply left to a higher point just to the right of Col Lazouney. To continue to Punta Lazouney, follow the steep north-facing slopes up to the narrow summit.
