Col della Salza

( 2.872 m)
Ski mountaineering
Start from Gressoney-La-Trinité
February - March

Brief description

This is a spring ski touring itinerary. When snow is scarce, the first section up to Cortlys is usually done with skis carried on your shoulder.
From the point where you leave the main valley, the ski slopes become wide and highly rewarding.
If you do not have solid experience with winter mountain conditions, it is advisable to hire a mountain guide.
Since the route may vary depending on snow conditions, the GPS track cannot be downloaded from the website and is not available on the official app.

Start point description

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left towards Gressoney.
The road goes up for a few hundred meters before branching off to the right into the Lys Valley. Continue along this road, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, Gaby, and Gressoney-Saint-Jean, until you reach the main town of Gressoney-La-Trinité.
Without entering the village, turn right following the signs for Staffal and continue to the end of the road, where you will find two large paid car parks.

Trail description

From the car park, cross the stream and follow the left bank along a flat section.
With a steeper stretch, you reach the Cortlys alpine huts on the left, where you can normally put on your skis.
From here, continue along the valley floor until you take a steep gully on the right, which leads into the upper area between the lateral moraine and the Salza Valley.
At this point, the ascent of the valley begins without a fixed route—your line should be chosen according to the snow conditions.
After some steeper sections, you reach the final basin. The last effort is to climb the steep but short gully that leads to Col della Salza.
