Città di Mantova Refuge

The ascent to Città di Mantova Refuge takes you to one of the main starting points for climbs to the Monte Rosa summits.
The hut is very popular with mountaineers coming from the Indren area, while far fewer ascend via this trail.
The altitude is already quite high—nearly 3,500 meters—so prior experience with high-altitude conditions is recommended.
To reach the starting point, you need to use the first section of the Gabiet cable car.
For the descent, it is also possible to follow the Salza Valley down to Staffal.

From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right toward Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left toward Gressoney.
After a few hundred meters, take the road to the right along the Lys Valley, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, Issime, Gaby, and Gressoney-Saint-Jean until reaching the center of Gressoney-La-Trinité.
Without entering the town, turn right toward Staffal and follow the road to the end, where you will find two large paid car parks.

From the arrival of the lifts, ascend to the Adler's Nest refreshment point and, before reaching the Albergo del Ponte, cross to the left onto the trail (trail marker 6A) heading toward the valley.
The trail continues along a contour path until it crosses the stream.
Continue along the path to reach the small dam that feeds the Gabiet Lake through a tunnel.
Leave to the right the trail leading to Rifugio Orestes Hütte and ascend to the left toward Col della Salza.
Follow the main trail, leaving to the left the path to Col della Salza, then turn decisively to the right, climbing along rocky small valleys.
Leave to the left the trail to Alta Luce and traverse into the valley leading to the Monte Rosa area.
The trail continues through the rocky valley and, with a final steeper stretch, reaches Città di Mantova Refuge.
Descent is along the same route.
