Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn right towards Turin. At the second roundabout, turn left following signs for Gressoney.
The road climbs for a few hundred meters before turning right into the Lys Valley road, passing through the villages of Lillianes, Fontainemore, and Issime.
Continue until you reach the main village of Gaby. Drive through the village completely, then continue until you find, on the left, the small road leading to the hamlet of Pont Trenta.
Follow this road and cross the narrow bridge; just after the bridge, you will find the car park.
The bridge is very narrow and steep; if you have a wide or low car, it is recommended to park in a small lay-by located just after the junction with the regional road.
Trail description
From the car park, follow the wide mule track that runs alongside the Lys stream, once used as the route to Gressoney.
The mule track ends before reaching the stream; here, turn left and climb up along a faint trail to join a larger path coming from the bend of the regional road.
The trail then turns sharply left and begins ascending through the forest. After a final, faintly marked traverse, you reach the small clearing of Alpe Ciavène.
From the first alpine huts, continue left across the steep meadow until entering the forest once again.
The path climbs steadily, passing near a water supply basin, before reaching a small flat basin where you find the huts of Rotterdach.
From here, retrace your steps, keeping on the level, until you rejoin the previously left trail.
Cross the forest to reach the huts of Jatz, beautifully positioned on a grassy knoll overlooking the valley floor. Looking towards Gressoney, you can also enjoy views of part of Monte Rosa.
The return follows the same route.
