Start point description
From the Pont-Saint-Martin motorway exit, turn left towards Aosta. At the roundabout, continue to the left, still following signs for Aosta.
Drive past Donnas until you reach Bard. Pass through the village and, at the end, you will find a large car park on the left along the Dora Baltea.
Alternatively, from the Verrès motorway exit, turn right towards Torino, pass through Arnad until the roundabout leading to Champorcher, continue straight for a few hundred metres, and you will find a large car park on the right.
Trail description
From the car park, follow the pavement to the traffic lights, cross the road, and enter the village. Continue to the small car park with a fountain.
Here begins a very steep path leading up to Albard. Ascend slowly, enjoying the progressively elevated views of the Fort of Bard, until reaching the houses of Vachourdaz and Issert. At this point, take the rural road that leads toward the small chapel of Albard. Pass to the right of the chapel and continue straight towards the houses, then turn right to follow the rural road forming part of the Cammino Balteo.
Follow the road lined with large chestnut trees. After the second hairpin, a path on the left begins, leading to Fobe. The path includes steep sections until reaching the small cluster of houses at Fobe. A short left-hand detour brings you to a votive shrine, offering a lovely view over the Albard valley.
Continue along the steep path, then traverse left to join the military trail that leads to the Col de la Cou. At the col, the ascent ends. Turn left to descend along the scenic military trail, which takes you past the Chestnut Museum and shortly after, back to the village of Albard di Bard.
Follow the tarmac road (some hairpins can be cut via less visible paths) until the end of the switchbacks, then turn sharply right to reach the houses of Nissert and descend quickly to the valley floor, returning to your car.
